SOS Update: SABC Board More Resign/ Now dysfunctional, Dali Mpofu wins case, Worker action at SABC, TVIEC and SOS work closely together.

The following update received from SOS.

Hello all

There hasn't been a dull moment at the SABC! As most of you are probably aware - three more board members have now resigned - Desmond Golding, Andile Mbeki and Bheki Khumalo. The Board is now totally dysfunctional. It doesn't quorate. Further, the acting chairperson, Ashwin Trikamjee is operating illegally because only the President can appoint the SABC Chair and Deputy Chair. Further, he is on his third term at the SABC and is only allowed to serve two terms. As Prof. Tawana Kupe says strictly speaking no board now exists! The Comms Parliamentary Portfolio Committee now has no option but to put an interim board in place. The Board will be meeting with the Minister of Comms this Friday (12 June). Will keep you updated on all developments there.

Also, there is a new development in terms of Dali Mpofu's legal battles with the SABC. He won his case today (Thursday). The Johannesburg High Court dismissed with costs the SABC's appeal against reinstating him. Dali however is apparently still considering his options.

Further, there has been significant worker action at the SABC. Unions have been calling for the resignation of the acting GCEO, Gabs Mampone. Also they have called for other senior management to resign.

Finally, I need to report back to you that I have now met with members from the TV Crisis Coalition and we have agreed to work closely together. We will be meeting regularly and briefing each other on all our campaign work.

Warm regards
Kate
