Collectively they make up the award-winning Johannesburg based Film and TV production house, Burnt Onion Productions. The trio brings to life a combination of fresh creativity and a commitment to quality. They have over twenty years of industry experience between them. The trio has produced short form and long form content, for various local and international broadcasters, including NETFLIX, SABC1, SABC2, SABC3, Multichoice, eTV and Viacom (BET, MTVBase, MTV, NICKELODEON, COMEDY CENTRAL).
They are known for their comedic flair and award-winning writing skills. They are behind successful hits such as the Netflix Original Film, Seriously Single which premiered in over 190 countries in 2020 and most recently they created and produced the first Netflix Original African holiday special, How to Ruin Christmas. The series went on to be the most nominated TV series at the 2021 South African Film and Television Awards.
The Directing Duo
Rethabile Ramaphakela and Katleho Ramaphakela have been working as TV writers, showrunners and producers for over 15 years. Their names have become synonymous with comedy in South Africa, having won the best writing for a TV Comedy awards at the South African Film and Television Awards for their 2014 mockumentary series, Check-Coast as well as their 2017 sitcom, Thuli noThulani. Their award-winning comedy drama series, Bedford Wives (2017), has been streamed worldwide on Amazon Prime and Netflix. The comedy duo made their directorial debut with the Netflix rom com feature film, Seriously Single. The film was in the Top 10 in over 30 countries. Most recently, they were the creators and showrunners of the Netflix Original holiday special, How to Ruin Christmas. |
